Psychologists who identify as Christian, and practice Christian counselling, can be difficult to find.
This website provides a list of registered psychologists in Brisbane who provide Christian counselling services as part of their usual practice.
How a Christian Psychologist can help
Psychologists are trained in a range of counselling strategies, to help individuals, couples and families with a range of issues such as depression, trauma, burnout and parenting problems. As a registered health practitioner, the scope of a psychologist’s practice is often broader than just the practice of counselling alone. Psychologists have training in areas such as:
- assessment of learning difficulties, memory problems, and personality functioning; and
- diagnosis and treatment of clinical disorders such as depression and anxiety.
Psychologists work in collaboration with GPs, counsellors and psychiatrists to provide expert mental health services.
Christian counsellors will often liaise with a psychologist and to gain a second opinion. If your Christian counsellor refers you to our service, then usually we will bulk bill the first 1-3 assessment sessions so that you can afford to attend your usual Christian counsellor while we assess the presenting problem.
Some conditions are not suited to counselling alone. If medical attention is needed to improve your health, then the psychologist may be able to identify a cause for concern that goes beyond the scope of counselling.
Psychologist services are confidential, and we recommend seeing a Christian psychologist that is not a regular attendee at your own church. This website provides a list of psychologists and their expertise so that you can work out who might be best to see. Some work primarily with children, others specialise in relationship counselling – whatever your concern, you should be able to find the right Christian psychologist for your needs.
All of our Christian psychologists are happy to discuss their beliefs, fees and areas of expertise over the phone prior to attendance, if that will assist with making a decision about who might be best for your situation.
